Chiropractic is a form of health care that bases its treatment around the function of the nervous system. The nervous system controls almost every cell in your body and the brain is its primary organ.
As Chiropractors we aim to improve relative brain (and consequent nervous system) function. We assess key indicators, and treat important determinants of how well the brain and nervous system is able to operate.
This includes, primarily, treatment of the spine, which is conducted by gently stretching the joints of the spine, using a range of applicable techniques.
Prior to treatment, a detailed history of the patient’s health is taken, and a thorough assessment is performed. Treatment is then undertaken, and is guided by the patient’s medical history, postural analysis, movement of the spine (and surrounding joints), performance of related nerves, orthopaedic tests, and palpation.
We may also assess, and treat, other neurological mechanisms that help to achieve desirable change in brain and nervous system function.
The patient is also often given exercises to complete in their own time, to aid with treatment.
Patients who present to chiropractic clinics commonly suffer from complaints including:
- Back Pain (Low Back, Neck, Thoracic, Pelvic)
- Headaches (incl. Migraine)
- Limb pain (incl. shoulder, elbow, wrist, hip, knee, ankle or foot)
- Jaw/TMJ problems
- Dizziness (vertigo)
- Other balance issues
However, we also see patients who present with none of these complaints, who are simply looking to take better care of their health and wellbeing.
As health care practitioners we encourage patients to maintain good health. Healthiness is multi-faceted, and is attained by having a balanced mixture of many things. In conjunction with other measures (including adequate nutrition and exercise – which we will also discuss during our consultations), we believe better health, and the avoidance of pain and chronic conditions, can be achieved with the help of Chiropractic. This is why we encourage patients to continue periodical Chiropractic treatment.
* The body is designed to heal itself, and optimal performance of the brain and nervous system is central to this.
