Elderberry

Herbal Spotlight : Elderberry

Elderberry has been in the spotlight quite a lot in recent times, and it’s not hard to see why.

Black elderberry, Sambucus nigra is the shrub species often found in supplements and is one of the most commonly used medicinal plants in the world. Elderberry has been used by indigenous cultures for centuries with the juice syrup traditionally used as a home remedy.

So what are the health benefits of Elderberry?

Due to their anthocyanin content, elderberry may:

  • clear the body of free radicals that damage cells at the DNA level
  • reduce the severity of certain common infections
  • have anti-inflammatory benefits, modulating the body’s immune response.

Traditionally and commonly, elderberry works to support upper respiratory problems, address viral infections, modulate inflammation and regulate activity of the immune system.

Many studies have shown that elderberry can prevent and substantially reduce the symptoms of upper respiratory viruses, such as influenza. It does this in part by inhibiting viral replication. So you can see why this glorious herb has had such an increase in interest over the last 2 years.

As we move into the cooler months, Elderberry is one of the best herbs to keep in the medicine cabinet. And the best part is that it is also one of the best tasting herbal remedies.

Here in Australia, the influenza season is typically between May and October.  According to the Australian Influenza Surveillance Report (AISR) the annual seasonal infection is unpredictable and varies from season to season. In 2019 Australia faced on of the worst influenza seasons on record, with Influenza A being the predominant virus in circulation that season. The results of one study show that elderberry syrup is effective against influenza A virus infections (in adults suffering from influenza-like symptoms for 48 hours or less), reducing duration of the illness by three to four days compared with placebo.

The symptoms of inflammation and viral infections can be uncomfortable. Why not book a time to talk with our Naturopath Candace Borg to help support better health and happiness as the cooler months approach.
